We had the opportunity to go to the 40th b-day party of Geoff, the great guy who is married to Kristen's good childhood friend. He is one of those people who can sit and talk with anybody for a long time, which means he can get along with all sorts of people, and he truly thinks of all of them as friends, and invited all sorts of different people to his b-day party. It was fun to sit and raise our eyebrows at some of the more colorful characters, but really it is just a great example of how easy going we should all be. I'm the guy everyone thinks is always in a bad mood. I won't introduce myself to strangers and most of the time I look like I am scowling, not exactly "Mr. Approachable". I could learn something from Geoff. It was pretty crowded and I typically like to find a corner where my back can be to a wall in social situations, just one of those things, anyway I got a chance to hang out with a couple of ladies in the kitchen and little newborn Ben, he was so cute, I got a chance to hold him for a while.
It's funny, I've always been a good listener, but different things catch my attention now. Apparently it is normal for newborn's eyes to roll back into their heads and do weird things, Amy called her mom the first time Ben did it thinking he was going into a seizure. I'll be looking for that one. I'm hoping Crystal posts the picture she put on Geoff's cakes next to a picture of their son, I've seen family resemblance before, but this was so exact it was creepy.
We also went four wheeling.... now there are different kinds of four wheeling, they shouldn't all have the same name. A few years ago I want with Scotty and a bunch of construction workers with dirt bikes and four wheelers and went to the sand dunes for the day. I had borrowed a different friend's machine, it was meant for trail riding more than digging in the dunes. They were zipping up and over and down and around jumping and what not, I was not quite as much of a dare devil and kind of wanted to see more than just one hill of sand.
This weekend we went four wheeling, not in sand dunes. We went trail riding. These trails could've easily supported trucks and jeeps, they were pretty well maintained. We went with my father and sister in law, one of his friends, Jim, and Jim's brother-in-law and the brother-in-law's girlfriend. I don't often get to feel like the young one. Jim is one of those guys that seems gruff until you've spoken with him for about three seconds. He looks like a gnome a little bit. He was nice enough to let me use his wife's four wheeler. He is an artist, very talented with oil paints. We are talking about some day taking a trail ride, setting up, and painting away the afternoon. I had fun, but my idea of trail riding was a little different than some of the others. They did silly things, like slow down for bumps and stayed on the trail. Yes, the high school dance teacher was the speed demon of the trip. They fed us well before and during the ride, and Jim, the trail guide, was totally cool with me taking off in front of the group and waiting for everyone every few miles, or whenever there was a fork in the trail. I took my hat off so I could feel the wind in my hair, it was great.
I think I have been teaching on Sundays too long. I think of everything as if I am going to try to make a parable out of it. On the four wheel trip I couldn't handle "following", If the trail wasn't exciting enough I would zig zag back and forth, aim for every bump I could find, and sometimes would leave the right path all together. I think I failed the "parable" department.
We watched an episode of "Friends" that got done at 11:30 at night. Phoebe thinks her mom who committed suicide has come back as a cat, Monica dates a guy who used to be popular in high school but has never grown up, Joey gets locked in an entertainment center and is robbed. At around 11:27 as the show was getting close to being over a commercial came on that was a cartoon of a young dinosaur reminding everyone to brush their teeth throughout the day and to floss. The other character in the commercial was called Dr.saurous.... Who exactly do they think is watching "Friends" just before midnight on a Monday night? Well, I better go floss.
